Ports of Stockholm in Brussels for dialogue on new European Port Strategy
Published 3/30/2026
At the end of March, Ports of Stockholm visited Brussels to participate in important discussions about the EU's recently adopted Port Strategy. The visit included meetings with several key players and organizations. How should Europe's ports adapt to a rapidly changing geopolitical and economic situation – and at the same time meet important, stricter environmental and climate requirements?
The delegation began its program at the Stockholm Region EU office in Brussels. Current issues related to transports, trade, infrastructure and climate change were discussed with Anne Andersson and her colleagues. This was followed by meetings with Isabelle Ryckbost at ESPO, where the competitiveness of Ports and their role in the green transition were the main subject. Among other things, the need for investments in electrification, onshore power supply and the importance of common EU rules were highlighted.
The visit concluded at the European Parliament. A debate was held on the future Port Strategy, moderated by Bogdan Oldakowsky from BPO. MEPs Magdalena Adamowicz and Merja Kyllönen, Torsten Klimke from DG Move were also present together with other representatives from the European Commission, CINEA and a number of Baltic Sea ports.
It can be noted that the new Port Strategy is being well received. It highlights the strategic importance of ports in the new global context and recognises the role of ports in strengthening competitiveness and transition in Europe, and that this requires investments, not least at national level.
