Icebreakers to be berthed in Stockholm

Published 6/16/2026

The Swedish Maritime Administration’s icebreakers will have a new home port in Stockholm. An agreement has been signed with Ports of Stockholm for access to two berths at Värtahamnen Port.

The first vessels to arrive are Frej and Idun, which will be stationed at the port between April and December for maintenance and preparations ahead of the winter icebreaking season.

As part of the agreement, Ports of Stockholm is building a dedicated onshore power connection for the vessels, enabling them to reduce emissions while berthed. The investment is funded by the Swedish Maritime Administration.

“We are pleased to welcome Frej and Idun to Värtahamnen. The agreement strengthens our cooperation with the Swedish Maritime Administration and demonstrates the flexibility of Stockholm’s port infrastructure,” says Stefan Scheja, Marketing Manager Ferries and Cruises at Ports of Stockholm.

“We need access to alternative berths for our vessels, particularly from a maintenance perspective. Stockholm is a strategic and efficient addition to our operations, both environmentally and economically,” says Ian Lewenhaupt, Fleet Manager at the Swedish Maritime Administration.

The Swedish Maritime Administration operates six icebreakers that help keep Swedish ports open throughout the year by supporting shipping traffic during winter ice conditions.
