CMA-CGM, the world's third largest container shipping company, has taken the decision to sail its own vessels directly to the major consumer market in the Stockholm region.
More and more goods are being transported in containers to Ports of Stockholm. Interest in the provision of goods by sea to the rapidly growing Stockholm region is continuously increasing.
CMA-CGM has now decided to bring its own vessels directly to the Container Terminal at Frihamnen.
“It is naturally extremely positive that CMA-CGM has chosen to commit to Ports of Stockholm. Shipping goods directly to the end consumer instead of transporting long distances overland is a smart and more sustainable way to transport goods,” says Henrik Widerståhl, Ports of Stockholm's Deputy Managing Director and Head of Marketing.
This means that Teamlines, Transatlantic, MSC and CMA-CGM will now all call at the container terminal in Stockholm.
Today nine out of ten of the goods we consume arrive in Sweden by sea. The number of containers (TEU´s*) handled by Ports of Stockholm increased by 5 percent during the first quarter of 2016, in comparison to the previous year. These are the strongest ever first quarter numbers.
*1 TEU (Twenty foot equivalent unit) corresponds to one 20-foot container.
